Do You Have Mold in Your Home?

I attended a mold class today taught by Jason Birk of Courtesy Care Restoration Services of NWA. In Arkansas mold is a huge problem with constant high humidity here. Mold grows in 68-86 degrees. What is your home temp set at? Most likely in that range. You might want to adjust to cooler temps in your home if you live in a high mold area.

Most people believe the myth that spraying clorox water on mold in your home will make it go away, but that is not the case according to experts. It takes clorox 8 hours to kill mold and you cannot keep clorox active for that long. This also adds moisture to the affected area causing more mold to grow.

The best home remedy is Dawn dish detergent or something equivalent mixed in water and the area wiped down with it. Gutters are also a great way to prevent moisture from building up around your property. Just make sure the drainage line is far away from the home and not draining next to home as is common. Also if your home was built without a house wrap moisture barrier between lumber and exterior finish you may have a problem in the future.

In Arkansas you cannot hire a regular home inspector to search home for mold, although they can tell you if there is organic growth. You have to hire a certified mold specialist to check the home. Courtesy Care offers mold restoration. They will come out and evaluate the problem area and let you know what it will take to fix it. They do a visual inspection for free. If they have to bring in tools its a $125.00 fee. Not bad to protect your family from a harmful air toxin.

Mold will only keep growing if not treated properly so it is best to go ahead and hire an expert to take care of the problem.
